The community will be asked to renew for two years the 18-mill levy on non-homestead and non-qualified property. Excuse, Please!

Please remember to call or send a note in with your child excusing his/her absences. We have an unusually high number of unexcused absences.

Please realize that absences can be excused for:
• personal illness
• quarantine of your home
• death of a relative (up to three days)
• observance of a religious holiday
• a professional appointment.

Family vacations that cannot be scheduled at a different time are also excusable. Please communicate a family vacation to the school or teacher ahead of time.

The office number is (989) 831–2500. It is important to excuse your child’s absences. If he/she accumulates three unexcused absences, the school has agreed to begin the Education Neglect or Truancy process.

Special thanks to Mrs. Suzanne Bowen for playing the piano and Mr. Steve Meinhardt from Casair for providing the equipment and time to provide quality audio and video for our programs.

The boys and girls all did a wonderful job performing today. Keep in mind, their practices had been limited because this program was scheduled originally for December 19. We had a snow day. The final practice day was scheduled for yesterday ... another snow day. All–in–all, the performances were good. Mrs. Anderson did a nice job preparing the Sheridan Elementary students for the programs. Thanks also to the teachers who supported the music programs.

Just a few reminders:

Today, you can pick up your child's fund–raiser items until 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.

School will be released at 1:25 p.m. on Thursday because it's the end of the marking period. Thursday evening, students can roller skate and participate in a costume contest between 6–8 at Rainbow Gardens in Crystal.

Students will not have class on Friday due to parent/teacher conferences. We will be sending home a reminder about conferences today or tomorrow. We encourage all parents to attend a conference with their child's teacher.

Students will not have class on Monday, either, due to professional development.

School will resume for students on Tuesday, November 4. That is also the day our student day will change to 8:55–4:05. Furthermore, that is the day of our annual Grandparents' Luncheon. If you wish to sign up for the luncheon, please get your sheet turned in by tomorrow.

Dodge Ball Tournament

Back to school night (recapped)

If you were unable to attend last night's meeting, here is what we covered.

We talked with families about our curriculum, MEAP's role in that curriculum, and the importance of attending school EVERY day. If your child is ill or your suffer and emergency, it's acceptable for children to miss school. Please call and inform the office anytime your child is absent, but unless he or she is ill or there's a family emergency, your child should be AT school. Please help us with this!!!

We talked about our student/parent handbook and the important items that it includes. We discussed the parent/student/teacher compact and why it's important to spend time reading and writing yours. We talked about Title I.

Another topic we discussed is the Responsibility Folder. We think they are really important and to show you how important ... Boys and girls, if you still have your Responsibility Folder from last year and you bring it back to school, we will reward you with a Hornet Pride bracelet. We are trying to reuse as many of the folders as possible.

Some teachers informed parents of grade level information during the meeting, but many of you were able to meet teachers and find out information and get your questions answered.

Thanks for coming out. We're excited about the start of the school.

Back–to–School Night

Our "welcome back" night will be Tuesday, August 26, from 5–7:30 p.m. We will be having a picnic–style dinner between 5–6 p.m. We are excited about this night because we're going to meet with the parents at each grade level in the library. Mrs. Autumn Black handed out reading awards; Mrs. Bowen, Mrs. Shafer, and Mrs. Buchholz handed out Pro–Solve awards; Mr. Delaney handed out National and Presidential Physical Fitness Awards; Mr. Heitmeyer handed out Fine Arts Troupe awards for Ms. Carpenter; Mr. Heitmeyer also handed out TV Studio awards, attendance awards, and a Mr. Clean award to the student who worked very hard to help out in the cafeteria this year!

Thanks to all of the students for wonderful behavior during the assembly!!!

Graduation '08

We received nearly 40 phone calls about whether we were holding Kindergarden Graduation '08. Because the weather passed quickly, although leaving a mess behind, the radar looked "good," so we decided to hold the 50th Anniversary of Kindergarten Graduation.

The event was fun for all — maybe just a LITTLE hot!

Representative Judy Emmons attended and presented Sheridan Elementary with a special recognition signed by her, Mr. Alan Cropsey, and Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Just a reminder that the Education Showcase will be Thursday from 6–8 p.m. at the middle/high school complex. Senior citizens are invited to arrive at 5:30 p.m.

Please help us keep our campus beautiful. Because of the late thaw and the amount of snow, we are asking that you please park in the designated parking spots. We will provide shuttle service from the upper elementary parking lot.

Please do not park on the Grass! The areas south of the drive (soccer fields) or northwest of the drive (near BB and SB fieldS) Are extremely wet at this point.

Kindergarten Graduation Turns 50!

Kindergarten Graduation turns 50!

It was 50 years ago this spring when Barbara Scott Beard celebrated her children’s successful completion of kindergarten with a graduation program.

In commemoration of this event, the staff at Sheridan Elementary School will be hosting an open house on May 18 from 2–4 p.m. All Sheridan Elementary past staff members and students are welcome to attend.

We are looking for photos, mementos, and thoughts from past graduation programs. Items can either be dropped off at the school office or mailed to:

Changes in time, days

The Board of Education and Central Montcalm Education Association agreed upon a make–up plan for the days missed due to inclement weather during the 2007–2008 school year.

The plan includes:
Friday, April 11, 2008, will now be a full day for students (no early release).

The last day of school (June 13) for students will now be a full day. Student make–up days will be June 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. These will be full school days.

The school day will also be adjusted by building to make up the remaining hours. The schedule will be adjusted starting March 17, 2008, as follows:

The Stanton/Sheridan day will be increased by 10 minutes: new start/end time: 8:50 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (old: 8:55–3:55).

The upper elementary day will be increased by 5 minutes: new start time: 7:25 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (old start time: 7:30)

The middle/high school day will be increased by 5 minutes: new end time: 7:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. (old end time: 2:15).

Do You Recycle?

We recycle a great deal of material at Sheridan Elementary. Our third grade students actually coordinate the project — and they do an excellent job of it (with a little help from their teachers!) Many of you used to recycle in the community downtown Sheridan; however, the company that used to run the recycle center is no longer offering the service. But, you can still recycle locally, just on a schedule. If you click, you will be able to see a brochure put out by the county explaining where you can recycle, and when.

For example, you can recycle:

The third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
The first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
City parking lot (Walnut and Camburn)

Scooter Week

Hello Everyone!

It has been a while since I posted on our school blog. One quick reminder that Jump Rope For Heart collection envelopes are due Monday, March 3, 2008 if you are raising funds for the American Heart Association.

On another note there sure are a lot of injuries around here today. Mr. Heitmeyer knew what activity I was doing without even asking before 10AM this morning because of the increase of students visiting the office with injuries. You see, scooters, although on many students list of favorite activities, seem to come with increased injuries.

The students are not breaking any rules when they get hurt, its just that with some activities there is a larger risk for injury. It doesn't help that the number one injury is rug burn, easily treatable with a cold wet paper towel and not ice! I do not have that problem at Stanton Elementary because the gym is not carpeted.

I could never take away the scooter activity from the students because of so many physical benefits that the scooters have. Students travel five different ways: 1) bottom, 2) belly, 3) back, 4) knees, and 5) run and jump on with their knees. Each way of traveling works different muscle groups and contributes to students overall spatial awareness.

The list of injuries that I have seen continues to grow, but to be honest, even the students that get hurt do not want to quit playing with the scooters. I have seen everything from rug burn, to blood blisters, run over fingers, tangled hair in scooter wheels (I do tell the girls how to prevent this from happening - nonetheless - OUCH!), and very rarely collisions - because the students do a wonderful job of looking out for one another.

So, if you hear a story this week about a scooter incident, know that your child was not the only one and I will continue this activity in the safest environment possible.

What exactly is RSS?

To “subscribe” to a Web site or blog’s RSS feed simply means that you are telling that Web site or blog, "Send me your information.” It’s similar to subscribing to a magazine or newsletter but you will get a list of headlines sent to your RSS reader. If the headline looks interesting to you, all you have to do is click on the headline and you’ll be sent to the whole story.

You can find RSS symbols or text links in your browser window, on the sides of the Web site page, or on the bottom of the page. The publishers of the sites and blogs really want people to subscribe to their RSS, so they will make it very easy for you to find the subscription links. Author Seth Godin once shared a great post about RSS.

I will write more about RSS this week, trying to help you understand it. It's a simple task that sounds much more complicated than it is. One thing you have to think about is what kind of reader you want to us. Again, simple sounding complex. I use Google Reader. You can click right to Google Reader here. There are many others to choose from.

Wizard of Oz Art Contest

Here is your opportunity to show your creative side. The musical the "Wizard of Oz" will soon be making an appearance on the state at Central Montcalm. The cast and crew invite you to join in the fun. Make a poster of our favorite Oz character or scene and win four pases to the show. There will be one winner at each of the elementary schools. Artwork will be judged on creativity, use of color and neatness. The est examples will be used to advertise the show. Please follow the rules below.

1. Work should be done by elementary students.
2. Work should be an original piece.
3. Work should measure no larger than 12X20.
4. Any medium may be used (crayon, pencil, paint, etc.)
5. Name, school, and grade should be printed clearly on the back in the lower right hand corner.
6. Turn your finished artwork in to Mrs. Suydam by Friday, February 22, 2008. No late entries will be accepted.
7. Judges' decision is final.
8. Work will become the property of the CMHS Theater.

So get out that paper and set your creativity free; let us see what you can do. Good luck! We hope to see you in the Land of Oz.

Spring Story Hour

Spring story hour at the White Pine Library in Stanton will be held on Tuesday mornings, March 4–May 13. Story time is for children who are 3, 4, or 5–years–old and begins at 10 a.m. Children enjoy stories, art projects, games, and a short literary–based film. Professional Development

Maybe you’re curious about what the teachers will be learning on Friday and Monday during the professional development days.

Friday, we will be learning about Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) along with the teaching staff from Stanton Elementary School. Since 1980, more than five million human service professionals around the globe have participated in the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training program to learn its proven strategies for safely resolving situations when confronted by anxious, hostile, or violent behavior, while still protecting the therapeutic relationships with those in their care. As part of a special education program study last year, it was determined that all of our staff members should be trained.

Monday, we will be taking part in three different activities. We will have a further study of the Thinking Map program that we integrated in August. Furthermore, we will spend some time analyzing Michigan Educational Assessment Program assessment data. Finally, in the afternoon, we will work with Dr. Bill Leibfritz, a Central Michigan University professor, on the mathematics topic of “problem solving” with Stanton teachers.

Our teachers will pack a great deal of learning into the two days. Annually, our teachers participate in at least 30 hours of intensive, sustained professional development.

Annual Kindergarten Graduation turns 50!

It was 50 years ago this spring when Barbara Scott Beard celebrated her children’s successful completion of kindergarten with a graduation program.

In commemoration of this event, the staff at Sheridan Elementary School will be hosting an open house this spring. The date has yet to be set. All Sheridan Elementary past staff members and students are welcome to attend.

We are looking for photos, mementos, and thoughts from past graduation programs. Items can either be dropped off at the school office or mailed to: Sheridan Elementary School; Attn: Kdg. Graduation Committee; 289 St. Clair St.; Sheridan, Michigan 48884.

Please include your name and address on any items you would like returned.
A planning committee will meet on Tuesday, February 19, at 6 p.m. in the Sheridan Elementary School library. Anyone interested in helping with the planning and organization of this event is invited to attend.

Round–up Scheduled

Stanton and Sheridan Elementary Schools have scheduled Kindergarten Round-Up times for this spring. Round-Up dates are April 22 and 23 at Stanton Elementary School and May 6 and 7 at Sheridan Elementary School. If you would like to register, please call Stanton Elementary School at (989) 831-2400 or Sheridan Elementary School at (989) 831-2500. You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization record, and proof of residency to the Round-Up.

Central Montcalm offers pre–school through third grade classrooms specializing in the unique needs of young children at both Stanton and Sheridan schools. Students must be five-years-old by December 1, 2008 to enroll. Please call the offices with any questions.

Bubbylonian Show

A free public performance of the Bubbylonian Encounter will be held Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the MCC Barn Theatre in Sidney. The Bubbylonian Encounter is a play explaining good touch and bad touch designed for 2nd and 3rd grade children attending Montcalm County elementary schools. In school performances begin February 28. This showing is for anyone wishing to preview the performance. The event is sponsored by the We Care for Kids Council working toward the prevention of child abuse and neglect in Montcalm County.

Through simple prose and vivid illustrations, this heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves.

Carold McCloud's book Have You Filled Anyone's Bucket Today? became the basis of a character–based presentation by three retired Central Montcalm teachers.

Kathy Buskirk, Suzanne Bowen, and Nicki Hansen have visited both Stanton and Sheridan Elementary Schools to deliver their important message.

Are you Firefoxing?

We recently surveyed our families and discovered that about 70% of you have Internet access. We're not sure which browser you use to surf the World Wide Web, but one of the best is Firefox. Several are available and many people are probably using Internet Explorer because it comes as the default browser on most PC–based systems.

If you are not already using Firefox, you can download it right here. It's an open source browser. All that means is that anyone can make upgrades and alterations to the program that make it customized and "cool." One incredible site where you can find all kinds of nifty "addons" is Mozilla Firefox — Have it Your Way.

Anytime I get a chance, I encourage people to at least give Firefox a shot. It also is great at protecting your computer system from viruses, trojans, and all those other scary things. By the way, Firefox and all addons are totally free.

Sheridan Food Drive
Thanksgiving has come and gone but we are still collecting food at Sheridan Elementary! Food items may be donated until December 7. On that day, 2nd grade students will be sorting and packaging the food to give to Sheridan families who need it. The following items are still greatly needed:

•Soups
•Canned fruit and vegetables
•Peanut butter

Thank you for your generosity! Your donations will make a difference for many families.

The food drive is being coordinated by Mrs. Kristen Kohn as a service–learning project through Central Michigan University. She is student teaching with Mrs. Patty Rockafellow this fall. She will graduate in December!

Winter Weather
The snow is beginning to fall and the air is getting cold. Please make sure that your child is arriving at school with warm winter gear.

Warm winter gear includes a winter coat, snow pants, boots, gloves/mittens, and perhaps scarves.

It is important for children to get the opportunity to go outside and play during recess. Generally, we will send children outside until the temperature (or windchill) gets to 0° Fahrenheit. At that point, we have indoor recess.

Please work with us to ensure that your child comes to school prepared for all types of weather! Thank you!!!

If you are in need of any items, we currently have several new and gently used items on display near the pick–up area by the cafeteria. The items are free for you if you see anything you would be interested in.

Parent Group
Our next Parent Group meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Holiday Happening
Please plan to attend the White Pine Library’s 9th Annual Holiday Happening on Thursday, December 6, at 7 p.m. Children and their families are invited to share in the holiday spirit with their friends at the White Pine Library.

“Story Grandma” Kay Rasmussen will visit for a special holiday story and then kids will have an opportunity to make several holiday crafts.
